Examine Critically
We study the historical, cultural, and institutional forces shaping psychotherapy.
Center for Therapeutic Advancement
Psychotherapy can help people heal, grow, and make meaningful changes in their lives. Yet gaps in training and pressures on clinical practice can compromise that promise.
At CTA, we examine the forces that strengthen or distort therapy, and advance the knowledge, skills, and communities needed to protect and restore its healing potential.
The Center for Therapeutic Advancement (CTA) grew from a concern shared by clinicians, scholars, and educators: that the healing purpose at the heart of psychotherapy can become obscured by the institutional, cultural, commercial, and intellectual forces that shape the profession.
CTA was created as a project of restoration and advancement: to examine those forces thoughtfully, preserve what is valuable in our field, and strengthen what comes next. That means recovering what should endure, examining what may be pulling the field away from its purpose, and building the knowledge, skills, and professional relationships needed for therapy to evolve without losing sight of why it exists.
CTA brings together clinicians, scholars, educators, writers, and other professionals committed to serious inquiry, open dialogue, and the continued development of psychotherapy. Our work is grounded in evidence, ethics, intellectual humility, and a shared responsibility to the people and communities our profession exists to serve.
Our Founding PrinciplesTo restore the healing ethos of therapy through education, community, and open inquiry.
We study the historical, cultural, and institutional forces shaping psychotherapy.
We promote evidence-based innovation and the highest standards of clinical excellence.
We bring mental health professionals together to learn, challenge, and support one another, while building the relationships and professional culture that support thoughtful, effective care.
Mental health care is receiving more attention, investment, and demand than ever. Yet important gaps remain in training, mentorship, clinical development, and the translation of knowledge into practice.
Expanding access matters, but access alone is not enough. Closing gaps in training, development, and clinical judgment is essential to improving care and outcomes.
CTA exists to help close those gaps and strengthen the conditions that support thoughtful, effective psychotherapy.
Clinical decisions should be grounded in the best available evidence and professional judgment.
Every individual deserves compassionate, respectful, and culturally sensitive care.
Complex problems require curiosity, critical thinking, and a willingness to question assumptions.
We hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards and advocate for our profession.
Collaboration and community are essential to advancing therapy and supporting clinicians.
We are building an enduring foundation for future generations of therapists and the people they serve.
